UP TO €30 Franco
Manca (4 Market Row,
SW9, tel: 020 7738
3021) This cheap and
cheerful restaurant in
Brixton Market was
considered a bit of a
culinary secret among
south London foodies
until recently, but now
folk from all across the
capital – and beyond
– make their own pizza
pilgrimage to see what
all the fuss is about. This
small pizzeria’s winning
formula is a combination
of a light yet crisp
sourdough base –
prepared 20 hours
before – and the giant,
traditional woodfi red
oven brought in from
heart of the West End,
on Old Compton Street,
is Balans – a Soho
institution. An excellent
option for a pre- or
post-theatre meal
thanks to its proximity
to Theatreland, its
modern brasseriestyle
all appetites. Dishes
such as seared scallops
with pork belly and
orange sweet soy
to start, and satisfying
mains include a
Bar Battu (48 Gresham
Street, EC2, tel: 020
7036 6100) Tucked
away in a corner street
in the City is this
exceptional French
wine bar-turned-fab
restaurant. But what’s
so exciting about
an establishment
championing vin de
France? Well, Bar Battu
is the Square Mile’s
fi rst natural wine bar,
selling superb organic
and biodiverse wines.
For those of us who
don’t know much about
natural wines, the bar’s
extensive wine list has
a breakdown at the
beginning explaining
the diff erence between
the biodiverse, cloudy,
organic, wild and clear
wines sold by the glass
and bottle. Once you’ve
ordered your wine,
tackle the food menu
with its fi ne French fare.
The crab with celeriac
is the star of the small,
tapas-like plates, and
you can’t go far wrong
with the bavette steak
and bone marrow –
perfectly complemented
with a robust glass of
organic red, of course.
EXCLUSIVE
Brasserie Joël (1st
Floor, Park Plaza
Westminster Bridge,
SE1, tel: 020 7620
7272) The Park Plaza
Westminster Bridge
exudes the cool,
anonymous glow of
the international hotel
chain, so it’s a surprise
to fi nd French chef
Joël Antunes running
an excellent brasserie
from its moodily lit
interior. Every dish is
full of fl air, from the
crisp, sweet beetroot
salad to the porcini
risotto that reminds
you what risotto is
supposed to taste like.
Delicious and for
the most part
reasonably priced,
it’s well worth a visit.
AFTER DARK
LOW KEY Gordon’s
Wine Bar (47 Villiers
Street, WC2N, tel: 020
7930 1408) It might not
look like much from the
outside, but Gordon’s
has plenty of character.
This tatty-but-cool
space dates back to
the 1680s, making it
the city’s oldest wine
bar – and hundreds of
years later, it’s still one
of the best places in
London to enjoy a glass
of wine, sherry or port in
candlelit, subterranean
surroundings.
