SALZBURG
Standing more than
3,000m above Lake Zell
and Hohe Tauern National
Park is the white-tipped
peak of Kitzsteinhorn,
a mountain and glacier that
off ers deep powder snow
all year round. With 138km
of ski runs and 53 cable
cars and lifts, Kitzsteinhorn
has been a favourite with
skiers since Austria’s fi rst
glacier lift started running
here in 1966. But now a new
development is opening it
up to a fresh audience.
“The Austrian Alps
are a miracle of nature,”
says Dr Norbert Winding,
explaining why he became
involved in PeakWorld
3000, a project that
showcases the area’s
incredible beauty. As the
director of Salzburg's
Natural History Museum,
Winding is accustomed
to bringing nature to the
people, but with this new
project he aims to take
the people to nature.
24 | TRAVELLER | MARCH 11
Perched at the
top of Kitzsteinhorn,
PeakWorld 3000
comprises a cinema,
gallery and restaurant.
But you won’t fi nd
the latest Hollywood
blockbusters showing up
here – like everything else
at PeakWorld 3000, the
cinema is dedicated to
Zell Am See’s landscape.
The inaugural screening is
Kitzsteinhorn: The Nature,
a short fi lm that tells the
story of the mountains in
the surrounding area.
The 360m-long
gallery will open in June,
housing fi ve exhibitions
and including an outdoor
viewing platform that
provides visitors with the
sort of breath-taking vistas
that are usually only seen
by dedicated Alpinists and
expert climbers.
It’s this incredible
beauty (and the year-round
snow) that prompted the
women’s US ski team to
name Zell Am See-Kaprun
their European training
base last season. Olympic
shredders such as Lindsey
Vonn and Julia Mancuso
kicked back at the resort
in between events, and
Vonn declared it her “home
away from home”. Winding
and his colleagues hope
that PeakWorld 3000
can convince many more
visitors to do the same.
PeakWorld 3000’s viewing
platform and gallery will
open this summer
Grand National
LIVERPOOL
The world-famous race at Aintree brings
Britain to a standstill every year, and
race is only half the fun – afterwards,
the party takes over Liverpool’s city
centre, as winners celebrate and
losers commiserate in the pubs
and bars. aintree.co.uk
