“YOU CAN’T
COMPARE
ZURICH TO
PLACES LIKE
LONDON
OR BERLIN –
IT’S A MUCH
SMALLER CITY”
➳ PETER KILCHMANN
FOUNDER, GALERIE PETER KILCHMANN
“The move to our new gallery is going
very well – everything is coming
together and it will open on 15 April.
It’s in a converted industrial building
in a district called Maag Areal, not far
from the Löwenbräu building, where
we were before. They used to make big
screws here for ships – it’s one of only
two buildings that remain, so it’s listed.
It’s in a modernist Bauhaus style, and
slightly curved.
“When we moved to Zürich West
more than 15 years ago it was very run
down, and lots of the shops were closed.
It was in a diffi cult situation at the
beginning of the 1990s. The authorities
legalised drugs in a part of Zürich,
and addicts from all over Switzerland
came to the area. But in the mid-1990s,
the music scene and party scene took
over. The Löwenbräu opened, and that
brought the art galleries here. People
realised it was a really central area that
had been neglected.”
➳ AFTER THE ART... “The place where
all the artists go to hang out is Café
Odeon (2 Limmatquai, tel: +41 (0)44
251 1650) – it’s quite stylish, with art-
nouveau decoration and unusual large
red banquettes.”
