present day, be subject to severe criticism if pursuing a like<br />

course. It was, however, deemed right and proper then, as the<br />

following from the Court records : shows<br />

"The :<br />

Court apprehending y<br />

it is not fit to deprive y e Indi-<br />

ans <strong>of</strong> any lawful comfort w ch God aloweth to all men by y e<br />

use <strong>of</strong> wine, do ord r y l<br />

it shall be lawfull for all such as are or<br />

shall be alowed licence to retaile wines to sell also to y e Indi-<br />

ans so much as may be fit for their needfull use or refreshing."<br />

Philip Challis and Anthony Colby petitioned the General<br />

Court in behalf <strong>of</strong> the new town to be made a distinct town,<br />

stating that they had obtained Mr. Shubael Dumer to be help-<br />

ful to them in the work <strong>of</strong> the ministry. The petition bears<br />

date May 27th, 1660. To this petition was appended the vote<br />

<strong>of</strong> the church <strong>of</strong> Salisbury, as follows :<br />

"Whereas certaine articles have binn mutually agred on<br />

betwixt the old toune, and the one which was to this effect,<br />

that when the new toune were at charged to mainteine one to<br />

performe y e worke <strong>of</strong> the ministry amongst them, they should be<br />

free from paying to the ministry <strong>of</strong> the old toune, in refference<br />

to which article the bretheren that live at the new toune have<br />

lately signified to the Church that they were in hand with Mr.<br />

Shubael Dumer for this end, desiring the churche's advice and<br />

furtherance therein, the church hereupon doe voate, that they<br />

app r hend Mr. Dumer may be a man suitable for that worke<br />

amongst them ; they further declare, that if fower bretheren<br />

seeke to y e honored Gen Court, who only have power to make<br />

.us distinct tounes, they shall not at all hinder them in theire<br />

suite ; and further, if the honored Gen Court doe free them<br />

from us, they shall not only submit thereto, but also further,<br />

what lies in them, their obteining <strong>of</strong> Mr. Dumer or any other<br />

meete man. This is a true copie <strong>of</strong> the churches vote, w ch was<br />

cleerely passed in the affirmative.<br />

"The Court judg it meet to concurre w th Mr Worcester &<br />

y e church in the paper hereto affixed, judging that the person<br />

in nomination for the helpe <strong>of</strong> the new toune may be a man<br />

meete for that worke."
