April 2d. Votes for Governor as follows :<br />

James Bowdoin 4.<br />

May 14th. " Voted to raise two hundred pounds to defray<br />

the charges <strong>of</strong>- the town."<br />

" Voted that the Selectmen sell the shovels, Axes and Pick<br />

axes at the best advantage."<br />

" Voted that the Selectmen look up the town guns and if<br />

any person refuse to deliver them up when called for to pro-<br />

ceed to prosecution."<br />

The guns were lent during war time^ to those who had none.<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> them came in chests from France, aud were distributed<br />

through the towns, and one or more chests were had and dis-<br />

tributed in <strong>Amesbury</strong>, some <strong>of</strong> which may still be found in fam-<br />

ilies and one or more at the Natural <strong>History</strong> rooms at the<br />

Mills.<br />

Dec. 10th. The river road having become a fixed fact the<br />

town instructed the selectmen to settle the damages for land,<br />

but they were unable to do so and the receipts show that the<br />

Court <strong>of</strong> Sessions made the award. Congress made a grant for<br />

lights on Plum Island this year.<br />

West Parish. A new meeting house has been built this or<br />

last year, as we find on the parish record, " Nov. 19 ordered<br />

to Stephen Clemens for making provision for the dedication <strong>of</strong><br />

the Meeting House jQi— o— o."<br />

This house was removed after the new church was built, pro-<br />

bably about 1842 or 1848.<br />

1788.<br />

One hundred pounds were raised for repairs <strong>of</strong> highways,<br />

and three shillings allowed per day for work.<br />

Three hundred pounds were raised for town expenses.<br />

April 7th. The Governor vote was, for John Hancock 32.<br />

for Elbridge Gerry 14.<br />

July 7th. A meeting was held in regard to a new valuation,<br />

and the selectmen were ordered to take a new valuation, and<br />

allowed 2 s. 6d. per day, 6 d. less than for work on the road.<br />

Dec. 18. This is a noted day for the election <strong>of</strong> the first<br />

President <strong>of</strong> the United States. The meeting was called at Mr.
