David Hoyt and Isaac Tuxbury received ^15 each for "fenc-<br />

ing stuff" for the parsonage land.<br />

Rev. Matthias Plant received ^15, 11 s., 2d., from the par-<br />

ish rate on account <strong>of</strong> the churchmen, <strong>of</strong> whom the following<br />

is a list : John<br />

Bartlett, Ehod Bartlett, Frank Bartlett, William<br />

Currier, John Huntington, Samuel Huntington, Jonathan Hunt-<br />

ington, Gideon Lowell, Samuel Lowell, John Hook, and Batt<br />

Moulton. Their tax was ^20, 3 s., 6 d., out <strong>of</strong> ^897. The<br />

foregoing is the first list found.<br />

Among the items <strong>of</strong> expense this year was "^15 for keep-<br />

ing Worrens Black child for y e time past." Capt. Sargent kept<br />

her and agreed to keep her till she was eighteen years <strong>of</strong> age<br />

for ,£20.<br />

"Ordered to Dr Robert Rogers for medsens for M s Weed<br />

and y e Widow Hookley 16 s."<br />

William Whittier petitioned the town for leave to set up a<br />

brick-yard "near the Button tree and was allowed to do so."<br />

This brick-yard was just west <strong>of</strong> the Buttonwood road at the<br />

bank <strong>of</strong> the Merrimac river, near the house <strong>of</strong> Thomas Page.<br />

How long Mr. Whittier occupied this yard is not known ; but,<br />

probably, for a number <strong>of</strong> years. On this Buttonwood road,<br />

about half way up to Daniel F. Morrill's, are the sights <strong>of</strong> two<br />

more brick-yards, where many bricks were once made. The<br />

"Button tree" here spoken <strong>of</strong> is named in the records <strong>of</strong> 1703<br />

and has been a very noted tree for a century and a half. It<br />

was the eastern bound on the river <strong>of</strong> the landing, as defined<br />

at that date.<br />

Mr. Daniel Kelley was greatly afflicted this year by the death<br />

<strong>of</strong> five children in fourteen days, as follows : October<br />
