to be set <strong>of</strong>f to the State <strong>of</strong> New Hampshire." The river<br />

would form a very natural boundary and should have been the<br />

original line, but no change was effected by this effort.<br />

Early in the year a meeting was held at the house <strong>of</strong> " Mrs.<br />

Widow Easther Colbys" to <strong>org</strong>anize the militia <strong>of</strong> the town in<br />

the East parish. It was decided to make two companies,<br />

divided as follows: "All south <strong>of</strong> the country road to the par-<br />

ish line from widow Esther Colby's to belong to the south<br />

company, and all that lies on each side <strong>of</strong> the country road<br />

above Mr. Bell's meeting house, including the families <strong>of</strong> Eph-<br />

raim Weed and Isaac Weed, all the rest <strong>of</strong> the parish to the<br />

north <strong>of</strong> said country road belong to the north company."<br />

Samuel Blaisdell was chosen captain, Nathaniel White first<br />

lieut. and Thomas Worthen second lieut. <strong>of</strong> the south com-<br />

pany, but they resigning, Nathaniel White was chosen captain,<br />

Samuel Follansbee first lieut. and John Blaisdell second lieut.<br />

John Barnard was chosen captain, Ephraim Weed jr. first lieut.<br />

and Isaac Barnard second lieut. <strong>of</strong> the north company. The<br />

companies were known as " Mills" and "Ferry" companies.<br />

April 4th. At Governor meeting, Hon. Thomas Gushing<br />

received twelve votes for Governor.<br />

April 1 3th. Ice in the Merrimac strong enough for crossing,<br />

and on the 16th, snow two feet deep and frozen very hard.*<br />

Moses Chase received liberty to set a shop on the town's<br />

land at the Ferry, by keeping the bank wall in repair.<br />

Elder Moses Chase and William Bagley were this year returned<br />

to the Assessors <strong>of</strong> the East parish as " Antipedo Baptists at<br />

Southampton, N. H."<br />

At this time the young minister Bell was very popular and it<br />

was thought advisable to give him better accommodations, and<br />

a lot was bought opposite the , store <strong>of</strong> the late William Bart-<br />

lett, and the erection <strong>of</strong> a parish house and barn commenced.<br />

This house, which many well remember, and which is yet stand-<br />

ing, cost the parish ,£236, 2 s., 9 d. The barn cost ^"21,<br />

14 s., 5 d. They were not completed this year, but were so far<br />

finished as to be occupied.<br />

The lot and buildings are now owned by Mr. Daniel Hunt-<br />
