May 10th. William Moulton and Stephen Sargent were chosen<br />

deacons <strong>of</strong> the Second church.<br />

Dec. 3d. William Rowell, David Sargent and wife, Thomas<br />

Fowler and wife, Henry Bagley and wife, Reuben Hoyt and<br />

wife, Christopher Rowell and wife, Widow Sarah Bartlett, Eliza<br />

Bartlett, Sarah Juell, Widow Ruth <strong>Merrill</strong> and Mary Juell were<br />

granted letters <strong>of</strong> dismission by the Second church, " in order to<br />

their being gathered with others into a church state at New-<br />

town, N. H."<br />

Richard Kelley was commissioned as captain <strong>of</strong> the "second<br />

foot company" in <strong>Amesbury</strong>, by Lieut. -Governor Phipps, March<br />

2 1 st. The commission is yet in good state <strong>of</strong> preservation, in<br />

the hands <strong>of</strong> Mr. Giles M. Kelley.<br />

To obtain recruits for the army under the Earl <strong>of</strong> Loudon<br />

was no easy task for Capt. Ge<strong>org</strong>e Worthen, and he found him-<br />

self under the necessity <strong>of</strong> using all the power conferred upon<br />

him by the royal governor. Accordingly he pressed into service<br />

such persons as he chose.* The following were accepted as<br />

substitutes for those who had been impressed, viz. : Jacob<br />

lis for Stephen Patten and Enoch Rogers, Philip Wells for<br />

Gideon Davis and his brother Francis, Isaac Challis for himself<br />

and Samuel Short, William Warran for Sergt. John Hoyt and<br />

Isaac Rogers, Walker for Isaac <strong>Merrill</strong>, Esq. ; Thomas<br />

Stone for Henry Blasdell, he being one-half for Samuel Silver,<br />

jr., and Abner Whittier the other half. John Currier (enlisted)<br />

as lieutenant. Jacob Pressy for himself and Benjamin Pilsbury.<br />

The foregoing were accepted by Col. Greenleaf, March 25 th.<br />

Aug. 15th. The following persons were drafted from the<br />

second foot company, viz. : John<br />
