We find no record <strong>of</strong> murders in town this year or <strong>of</strong> per-<br />

sons being carried into captivity.<br />

A square-stern vessel <strong>of</strong> about forty tons was built this year.<br />

She was owned in Boston and named the<br />

1705.<br />

At the annual meeting it was "voted to throw up the road<br />

through Thomas Nickols' land on condition that he give the<br />

town a landing place six rods long on the river and four rods<br />

wide up the bank." The above was a road across a portion <strong>of</strong><br />

the plain near Tappan Emery's to the river, probably not far<br />

from the present one which terminates near the late Moses<br />

Currier's, at the steep bank.<br />

Again the town was troubled with war and Indian depreda-<br />

tions to such an extent that it became necessary to lay the<br />

matter before the people at an adjourned meeting, when "it<br />

was voted upon consideration that the town is under such difi-<br />

culty this time <strong>of</strong> war that y e whole town cant have the bene-<br />

fit <strong>of</strong> any settled place for schools without exposing our child-<br />

ren to great danger in travelling our rodes these things consid-<br />

ered we see case to impower the Selectmen to take y e best<br />

care y' they can to apoint such places as they shall think may<br />

be best for y e town and to employ such parsons as they shall<br />

think may be for the best."<br />

"At this same meeting the town seriously considering the difi-<br />

culties that the people at Jamaco are under these troublesome<br />

times that there old people and children cant but sildome come<br />

to meeting these things considered at the present meeeting it<br />

was voted that the Minister preach every third Sabeth day at<br />

Jamaco at such place or places as shall be provided for that<br />

sarvis and this to continue for one yeare."<br />

At this time the roads were not much better than paths spot-<br />

ted through the woods, few if any carriages being in use, except
