years ago were wont to tell <strong>of</strong>, when no roads were broken<br />

out and people went to mill with their hand-sleds across the<br />

fields, through the woods and over the fences, which were<br />

nowhere seen.<br />

Rev. Stephen Hull was ordained pastor <strong>of</strong> the First church in<br />

<strong>Amesbury</strong>.<br />

At the East parish meeting, Thomas Goodwin, Enoch Hoyt<br />

and William Currier were chosen "to take care <strong>of</strong> the boys on<br />

the Sabbath," and David Webster "to drive the boys into the<br />

meeting house on the Sabbath." *<br />

The repairs on the Sandy Hill meeting-house were not yet<br />

fully completed, although the appropriation was exhausted.<br />

More money being needed, a meeting was held and the sum<br />

<strong>of</strong> $400 raised to finish the work. Mr. Joseph Bartlett was the<br />

contractor for the work and was but poorly paid. The total<br />

sum raised was $800. The following cut, although not a per-<br />

fect picture <strong>of</strong> the venerable church, has a general resemblance<br />

<strong>of</strong> the house and adjacent grounds.<br />

SANDY HILL MEETING-HOUSE.<br />

Oct. 8th. Isaac <strong>Merrill</strong>, son <strong>of</strong> Jacob <strong>Merrill</strong>, who owned<br />

the farm where Lewis B. Davis lives, was instantly killed by<br />

lightning about nine o'clock, P. M. He was unloading his<br />

father's freight <strong>of</strong> salt hay, which occupied the day and even-<br />
