the eastern side <strong>of</strong> the ferry hill and through the sand hollow<br />

to Whittier's hill, and thence over the hill to New Hampshire<br />

line. These were the first roads laid out, portions <strong>of</strong> which<br />

have been discontinued, viz. : part over the ferry hill, and part<br />

over Whittier's hill. Of the main road running westerly through<br />

town, a very small part has been discontinued, viz. : that part<br />

running back <strong>of</strong> the houses <strong>of</strong> W. F. Vining and John Currier.<br />

April 5th. Another meeting was held to regulate matters, and,<br />

among other things, the prices <strong>of</strong> labor. This difficult question<br />

was readily settled in those days, as follows :<br />

"Also, it was ordered yat e<br />

y year shall be accompted thus:<br />

e from y first <strong>of</strong> November to<br />

e <strong>of</strong> y i month ( March<br />

shall<br />

e be winter months and y seven other summer months, and<br />

all laborers for y e winter months shall have no more but 16 d.<br />

p r day, and for y e summer months 20 d. p r day ; and all carpen-<br />

ters shall have 2 d. p r day more yan laborers, yat is, 18 d. p r<br />

day in winter, and 22 d. p r day in summer."<br />

"Also, yat mowers shall have no more but 2 d. p r day, and<br />

if yey mowe p r y e acre yey shall not exceed 2 d. p r acre."<br />

" Also, yat no man shall sell claboards <strong>of</strong> five feet in length for<br />

more yan yree shillings p r hundred ; and if shorter, according<br />

to p r portion; and if they cleave by y e hundred, yey shall not<br />

exceed six pence p r hundred for five feet in length."<br />

"Also, yat no man shall sell anie sawn board for more yan<br />

five shillings p r hundred, and for y e sawing no more yan yree<br />

shillings, six pence p r hundred ; and for split work no more<br />

yan 4s. 6d. p r hundred."<br />

"Also, yat y e fferriman shall take no more <strong>of</strong> y e town but 2d.<br />

a person for going or rowing over ye river ; and all great beasts<br />

6d. p r head and 3d. p r calfe, and all small cattell id. a head."<br />

"Also, yat butter shall not be sould for above 6d. p r pound,"<br />

and this price continued for more than forty years.<br />

"Also, yat milk shall be sould for yree half-pence a quart<br />

new milk, and 1 d. skimd milk—ale measure."<br />

April 2 1 st. A general town meeting was held and William<br />

Osgood was granted " 50 acres <strong>of</strong> upland " and " 10 acres <strong>of</strong><br />

meadow" "on condition yat he build a mill yat may be suffi-<br />
