FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF MERRIMAC.<br />

This bank was incorporated in 1864 with a capital <strong>of</strong> $50,000,<br />

which was increased to $75,000 in July <strong>of</strong> the same year. In<br />

November, 1864, it was extended to $100,000; in July, 1872,<br />

to $150,000, and in May, 1875, to $200,000. The total earn-<br />

ings amount to $259,341.32;<br />

total dividends, $208,250; undi-<br />

vided pr<strong>of</strong>its, $6,091.32 ; loans, $289,712.52 ; deposits, $76,089.28.<br />

MERRIMAC SAVINGS BANK.<br />

This bank was incorporated in 1871. Its whole amount <strong>of</strong><br />

deposits is $193,556.28 ; number <strong>of</strong> depositors, 1049 ; surplus,<br />

$2,438,85. William H. Haskell, president; D. J. Poor, treasurer.<br />

MERRIMAC MANUFACTURING COMPANY.<br />

This company was incorporated in 1848, with a capital ol<br />

$40,250. The amount <strong>of</strong> business done in 1880 was $75,266:<br />

number <strong>of</strong> hands employed, 35 ; number <strong>of</strong> sets <strong>of</strong> wheels made,<br />

4094 ; number <strong>of</strong> sets <strong>of</strong> parts, 3800. F. S. <strong>Merrill</strong>, agent.<br />

MERINO SHOE COMPANY.<br />

This company was incorporated in 1876, with a capital <strong>of</strong><br />

$40,000. Its business in 1880 amounted to $100,000; number<br />

<strong>of</strong> hands employed, 75 ; number <strong>of</strong> pairs <strong>of</strong> boots and shoes<br />

made, 90,000. A. A. Hawley, agent.<br />

AXLE FACTORY.<br />

This factory commenced business about the year 1834. Jonathan<br />

B. Sargent, Esq., started the manufacture <strong>of</strong> axles at West<br />

<strong>Amesbury</strong>, and afterwards added the manufacture <strong>of</strong> steel car-<br />

riage springs. Mr. Richard Stoyles was an experienced workman<br />

in the latter branch and continued in Mr. Sargent's employ<br />

many years. The Merino Shoe Company now occupy the factory<br />

where Mr. Sargent managed a pr<strong>of</strong>itable business for many<br />

years, manufacturing axles and springs.<br />
