this section, and it may be that in their own estimation they<br />

were able to maintain a minister in their midst, which would be<br />

a great convenience. Or, it may be that dissentions had crept<br />

into the church to such an extent that it was deemed advis-<br />

able to settle the matter by establishing a second one. It has<br />

been thought by some that this move was to establish a church<br />

west <strong>of</strong> the Powow river ; but such could not have been the<br />

case, as there were few, if any settlers there at this time. The<br />

most reasonable conclusion is that the intention was to <strong>org</strong>anize a<br />

second church at the west part <strong>of</strong> the town, for the conven-<br />

ience <strong>of</strong> the settlers there.<br />

April 2 1 st. It was "ordered that the fence between Samuel<br />

ffelloes & Phillip Challice his house shall be sett up in the<br />

same place where it was wont to stand, pVided the pties make<br />

a sufficient gate for the use <strong>of</strong> y e Contry." Phillip Challice<br />

seems to have been in Salisbury (old town) at this time, by<br />

the above order.<br />

It was "ordered that the lane w ch turn at Richard Currier's<br />

new house goe no farther thau John Fuller's planting-lot."<br />

A rate <strong>of</strong> ^20 was ordered to pay the expenses <strong>of</strong> the town.<br />

John Eaton, sen., was chosen grand juror.<br />

Samuel Winsley, who, like many others, was engaged in the<br />

fishing business, was allowed " the acre reserved for fisherie on<br />

an island by the river side in Mr. Hook's bounds, as long as<br />

he continues fishing."<br />

The bounty on wolves was fixed this year at £1, 10 s., and<br />

on foxes at 1 s. each.<br />

This year a stringent law was passed, requiring every town-<br />

ship <strong>of</strong> fifty families to maintain a school, and the preamble to<br />

the law is worthy <strong>of</strong> being read by every one :<br />

" It being one cheife p r iect <strong>of</strong> y l ould deluder, Satan, to keepe<br />

men from the knowledge <strong>of</strong> y e Scriptures, as in form r times, by<br />

keeping y m in an unknowne tongue, so in these latt r times by<br />
