the whole measure was completely changed, as the following<br />

"Att y e same miting it was voted that this tract <strong>of</strong> land above<br />

lifting shall not be disposed <strong>of</strong> this twenty yeare to these men<br />

above ritting." So the whole matter rested quietly for two<br />

years.<br />

April 1 2th. William Barnes sold to Richard Currier six acres<br />

<strong>of</strong> land " bounded with y e west with y e hollow highway", which<br />

would locate the tract in the vicinity <strong>of</strong> Winthrop Collins'. The<br />

Sandy Hollow road is therefore a very ancient one, and was<br />

probably laid out among the first in town.<br />

John Pressy bought two river lots this year—lot No. 9 <strong>of</strong><br />

Ge<strong>org</strong>e Martyn and No. 10 <strong>of</strong> Nathan Gold. The Pressy fam-<br />

ilies were located west <strong>of</strong> Pressy's creek mostly at first, and<br />

these lots were between the two creeks in that vicinity.<br />

Jeremiah Houchin was deputy this year.<br />

The most important event this year was building a meeting<br />

house in the new town, which was very much needed for the<br />

convenience <strong>of</strong> the people.<br />

Jan. 4th. A town meeting was held at which " it was votted<br />

y 1 there shall be a meeting house bilt in the new towne by y e<br />

next midsomer insuing y e date here <strong>of</strong> w ch house is to be bilt<br />

thirty foot long, five and twenty feet wide and sixteen foot stood<br />

or there abouts."<br />

" Att y e same meeting there was chosen Thomas Barnard senr<br />

and John Hoyt sen and Richard Currier for y e caring on <strong>of</strong> y c<br />

above said menchened metting house and also they are impow-<br />

ered to hire workmen for y e earring on <strong>of</strong> y e worke for y e build-<br />

ing <strong>of</strong> y e above said house and also they are furder impowered<br />

to see w' y e new town will give in way <strong>of</strong> contribution for y e<br />

building <strong>of</strong> this metting house and w l doth fall shorte <strong>of</strong> pay<br />

by contribution then to make a ratt for y e carrying on <strong>of</strong> y'<br />

worke."<br />

"Att y e same metting it was votted y' y e above menchened<br />

metting house shall stand upon y e land bought <strong>of</strong> Edman Ell-<br />

eat for a buring place."
