At the election for governor, Samuel Adams received fifty-two<br />

votes and state senators thirty-six votes each, except Christopher<br />

Sargent, who had but thirty. At the presidential election held<br />

November 7th, the whole number <strong>of</strong> votes cast was twenty-<br />

nine.<br />

David Tuxbury still lives and comes forward, to the great<br />

annoyance <strong>of</strong> the town, with his favorite idea <strong>of</strong> a Presbyterian<br />

society. He had forwarded to the General Court a petition for<br />

an act <strong>of</strong> incorporation, and an order <strong>of</strong> notice had been served<br />

on the town to show cause why the petition should not be<br />

granted.<br />

The town "Voted to choose a Committee to give their rea-<br />

sons why the prayer <strong>of</strong> David Tewksbury and others should not<br />

be granted." The idea <strong>of</strong> dividing the people into so many<br />

religious societies never met the approval <strong>of</strong> the early settlers.<br />

The town is now supporting thirteen persons at an expense<br />

<strong>of</strong> $358-84-<br />

The new valuation cost the town $54.<br />

The Ferry people were this year somewhat troubled about<br />

building a new school-house, being unable for some time to<br />

agree how or what should be done. The first meeting was<br />

called May 6th "to agree on some method to build a new<br />

school house," and resulted in an adjournment after choosing a<br />

moderator and clerk. Another meeting was warned on the 13th<br />

to be held on the 16th inst., at which time a committee was<br />

chosen, with Capt. William Lurvey as chairman, to advise on a<br />

plan. The committee was instructed "to inform themselves <strong>of</strong><br />

the expense and best dimensions either for a brick or a wooden<br />

one and inform the proprietors at an adjournment <strong>of</strong> the meet-<br />

ing," and the meeting was adjourned to the 20th inst.<br />

At the adjourned meeting it was voted to build, and then<br />

immediately voted to do nothing. But, presto change. "Then<br />

again went on and signed for shares to build a new school<br />

house and ordered the committee to go on and purchase mate-<br />

rials and workmen to build s d house." "And the committee<br />

went on and built the house in part, according to the dimen-<br />

sions agreed on by the District." The house was nearly com-
