A separate tax was assessed, by order <strong>of</strong> the General Court,<br />

on the Quakers, amounting to ^76, 13 s. 4 d., and the follow-<br />

ing is a list <strong>of</strong> those taxed :— Ebenezer Currier, Peleg Challis,<br />

David Challis, Thomas Challis, John Huntington, Abner Jones,<br />

Ezekiel Jones, Aaron Rowell, Joseph Pressy, Jacob Weed, John<br />

Huntington, jr., Jonathan Reed, Daniel Hoage.<br />

The following document is found in the clerk's <strong>of</strong>fice :<br />

"<strong>Amesbury</strong>, March 17th, 1760.<br />

We, the subscribers, have each <strong>of</strong> us Respectively Received In<br />

Sikes' Company<br />

full <strong>of</strong> our wages for service as Soldiers in Cap 1<br />

and Cap 1 Bayly's Companys, In the year 1759. Recv d the same<br />

<strong>of</strong> Leu 1 John Currier, as witness our hands.<br />

The following deposition may be <strong>of</strong> interest as throwing some<br />

light on the treatment <strong>of</strong> soldiers in the old French and Indian<br />

war :<br />

"The Deposition <strong>of</strong> Enoch flanders <strong>of</strong> <strong>Amesbury</strong> and Daniel<br />

flanders <strong>of</strong> Salsbury both in y e County <strong>of</strong> Essex & province <strong>of</strong><br />

y e Massachusetts bay, <strong>of</strong> Lawfull age, testifieth & saith that we<br />

Inlisted our selves as Soldiers in y e year 1759, under Capten<br />

Richard Seiks that we went up to lake ge<strong>org</strong>e at Albany<br />

we each <strong>of</strong> us Received a province arme & we went up to<br />

y e forte at y e narrows & did Duty under General Amherst, & on<br />

our Return home when we came to Still water we had each <strong>of</strong><br />

us our armes with us but by the order <strong>of</strong> y e chief <strong>of</strong>nsser <strong>of</strong><br />

y e forte at y e s d Still water, Each <strong>of</strong> our armes wear taken<br />

from us s d <strong>of</strong>fisser as we wear told was a leu 1 & we wear<br />

told his name was mecains & he gave us no Receipt for said<br />

armes & further says not.<br />
