Orlando and Jonathan Bagley petitioned for leave "to build a<br />

wharf fifty feet in width on the piece <strong>of</strong> flats between Mr.<br />

Lowell's wharf and Timothy Currier's, about midway between<br />

them, from the bank to the channel <strong>of</strong> Powow river," and was<br />

allowed to do so.<br />

; Fowler has for years been allowed ^5 per year to<br />

assist in maintaining his diseased or 11011 compos daughter.<br />

This year he asked for ^10 and was allowed £6 in provisions,<br />

to be ordered by the selectmen.<br />

Capt. Thomas Rowell, Left. John Hoyt and Abner Whittier<br />

were chosen to hire a school-master for the town and direct<br />

"y e time and place where y e school shall be kept at the west<br />

end <strong>of</strong> the town," and Orlando Bagley, Stephen Bartlett and<br />

Jacob Bagley were chosen to order the place at the east end.<br />

The following is a copy <strong>of</strong> the assessors' certificate, filed in<br />

1 741, the .original being now in the clerk's <strong>of</strong>fice, giving a com-<br />

plete list <strong>of</strong> the Quakers in the East parish.<br />

"A list <strong>of</strong> the Names <strong>of</strong> those persons called quaakers In the<br />

East parish in <strong>Amesbury</strong> given out In compliance with an act<br />

<strong>of</strong> Court Directing there to be put on Record by the Town<br />

Clark are as followeth<br />

Jacob Rowel and we Know <strong>of</strong> No others that have<br />

Aaron Rowel ever obtained sartificats from the soci-<br />

Edward Upton ety <strong>of</strong> quakers according to s d act <strong>of</strong><br />

Samewel Barnard Court to free them from paying tax<br />

John Jones to the ministry Established according<br />

Samuel Gould to the laws <strong>of</strong> the Province.<br />

The winter <strong>of</strong> this year seems to have been a very cold one<br />

according to Richard Kelley's diary, which we quote, as fol-<br />

lows : "febuary 28, 1740-41 then I went down to newbury<br />

with my team & carried a load <strong>of</strong> wood for Mr Joseph Dow &<br />

sume other teams with me, we went on to y e River at Sweats
