1820.<br />

Appropriations: Schools, $800; town charges, $1400 ; repair-<br />

ing <strong>of</strong> highways, $900.<br />

Nov. 6th. Presidential election occurred without much inter-<br />

est, only sixteen votes being cast.<br />

The population <strong>of</strong> the town has increased from one thousand<br />

eight hundred and ninety in the year 18 10 to one thousand<br />

nine hundred and fifty-six the present year.<br />

.The mill known as No. 3, at the Mills, standing on the Salis-<br />

bury side <strong>of</strong> the Powow river at the bridge, was built this year.<br />

A post-<strong>of</strong>fice was this year established at the Mills and Capt.<br />

Jonathan Morrill appointed postmaster.<br />

1821.<br />

Thomas Huntington, son <strong>of</strong> the pensioner William Hunting-<br />

ton, disappeared on the night <strong>of</strong> November 2 2d and no trace<br />

<strong>of</strong> him could be found. It was thought that he had been mur-<br />

dered and some arrests were made, but no pro<strong>of</strong> was found <strong>of</strong><br />

foul play.<br />

1822.<br />

March 2d. The body <strong>of</strong> Thomas Huntington, who mysteriously<br />

disappeared last November, was found in the Powow<br />

river, and it was thought probable that he accidently fell in<br />

while crossing a plank connected with a foot path over some<br />

part <strong>of</strong> it.<br />

Warren Lodge <strong>of</strong> Accepted Masons was chartered this year<br />

and the following are the names <strong>of</strong> the charter members<br />

Benjamin Sawyer, Edward Dorr, Lowell Bagley, John Colby,<br />

Nathaniel Fifield, William O. Mills, Valentine Bagley, Ge<strong>org</strong>e<br />

W. Bagley, Daniel Long, James Horton, David Nayson, Ben-<br />

jamin R. Downes, William H. Bagley and Samuel Walton.<br />

Oct. 28th. Valentine Colby (father <strong>of</strong> the late Deacon Peter<br />

Colby) sold the right to flow his land around the pond to the<br />

" <strong>Amesbury</strong> Nail Company, <strong>Amesbury</strong> Woolen and Cotton Manufacturing<br />

Company, <strong>Amesbury</strong> flannel Manufacturing Company,<br />

Salisbury woolen Manufacturing Company—David Nayson, Bar-<br />
