an able young minister. The following ministers were employed<br />

subsequent to Mr. Odlin's death, and may have been candi-<br />

dates, viz. : Joseph<br />

Adams, Ebenezer Adams, Mr. Upham, Mr.<br />

White, Solomon Page, M. Parepaynt, Benjamin Butler and Mr.<br />

Feveryear. The price <strong>of</strong> a day's preaching was £1.<br />

The <strong>Amesbury</strong> monthly meeting in May accepted John Huntington<br />

as a Friend. This is the first instance <strong>of</strong> any member<br />

by that name.<br />

The selectmen were<br />

ordered to lay out a road from Barna-<br />

bus Bradbury's to Titcomb's landing.<br />

One hundred pounds was raised for public expenses.<br />

On the 1 8th <strong>of</strong> November there was a shock <strong>of</strong> an earth-<br />

quake, but there seems to have been but little damage done.<br />

Capt. Richard Kelly, in his diary, thus describes it :<br />

18, it being Tuesday, about 4 o'clock<br />

in the morning was an exceeding shock <strong>of</strong> y e earthquake which<br />

shook nere as much as that in y e yere 1727, October 29, but<br />

y e noise was not so loud ; it continued a great while, I think<br />

the longest that ever I herd in all my life, & just as y e day<br />

brake there was another but nothing so hard as y e former, &<br />

I have herd it every day since to y e 2 2d day <strong>of</strong> s d month."<br />

The French and Indians were giving the Colonies trouble,<br />

and soldiers were called for to maintain the peace.<br />

The following men enlisted and went to Kennebec :— John<br />

Martin, Robert Ring, Bartholemew Perkins, Ephraim Hodgkins,<br />

Joseph Birrel ; and to Oswego, Bartholemew Perkins, Robert<br />

Ring, Ephraim Hodgkins, Samuel Colby, Jacob Chalks, jr.<br />

The following persons enlisted and went to "Minis :"— Timo-<br />

thy Sargent, jr., Benj. Ordway, Stephen Ordway, Isaac Foot,<br />

Ephraim Sargent, Peter Stevens, Joseph Burril, John Blasdell,<br />

Thomas Chase.<br />

The following went to Crown Point :— Capt. Stephen Sar-<br />

gent,* Thos. Clark, Timothy Colby, Matthias Hoyt, Thos. San-<br />

ders, Philip Sargent, Moses Pressey, Jacob Hoyt, Joseph Har-<br />

vey, Philip Hunt, Thomas Sargent " y e 3d," Jacob Harvey, True<br />
