bills were paid for court expenses and also a lawyer's bill.<br />

There seems to have been a lawsuit but the record throws<br />

very little light on the affair.<br />

John Poor was school-master at the Ferry this year one<br />

quarter.<br />

John Mycall kept school one quarter (probably in the West<br />

parish)<br />

Winthrop <strong>Merrill</strong> (at the Ferry) made a " powder chest<br />

for the town.<br />

Isaac <strong>Merrill</strong>, Esq. received ^28, 19 s., 10 d. for services at<br />

the Provincial Congress.<br />

May 20th. A call was issued by the selectmen for a town<br />

meeting on the 25th inst. to choose representatives, and it is<br />

worthy <strong>of</strong> note that it was called " In observance <strong>of</strong> the Re-<br />

solves and Recommendations <strong>of</strong> the Provincial Congress." Al-<br />

ready had the town rejected " His Majesty's " authority and it<br />

never more appears in town records.<br />

Capt. William Hudson Ballard from the Ferry was in the<br />

service during a part <strong>of</strong> the war but how long or at what pe-<br />

riod is not quite certain. From the account book <strong>of</strong> Jonathan<br />

Blaisdell it would seem that he was at Cambridge soon after<br />

Gen. Washington assumed command. Mr. Blaisdell was a gun-<br />

smith and was evidently at Cambridge repairing the guns for<br />

Washington's army. The account book contains nearly two hun-<br />

dred charges embracing guns from nineteen regiments and forty-<br />

four companies. There is no date to fix the exact time, but<br />

the heading reads " Cambridge iune 25," and one later charge<br />

is as follows: " David Boyd to menden a gun, o, 15, o. Abraham<br />

Miler Captn in genaril wosenton regiment."<br />

At this time Captain Ballard's company was present and also<br />

Captain Currier's, and Mr. Blaisdell repaired guns in both com-<br />

panies.<br />

1776<br />

A committee <strong>of</strong> safety and correspondence was chosen con-<br />

sisting <strong>of</strong> Lieut. John Barnard, Winthrop <strong>Merrill</strong>, Christopher<br />

Sargent, Enoch Rogers, Peleg Challis, Ezra Worthen and Oba-<br />

diah Colby. This was an important committee and very wisely<br />
