We along with many other families of homicide victims fully endorse Mr Clifford’s statement to your committee as he highlighted the need for the PCC to be replaced by an independent body where ordinary members of public must be able to present their evidence in person when they have justifiable concerns about irresponsible journalist and their publishers. We would be most grateful if you would insert the following clarification in your official records regarding Mr Max Clifford's excellent evidence on 30 January 2011 highlighting the lack of remedy available to ordinary members of general public when spurious articles are published about them or a deceased member of their family. In the course of given his excellent evidence to your committee Mr Clifford made mention of the murder of our much loved daughter Diane and the subsequent death of our dear son Alan due to malicious falsehoods published by a certain irresponsible Scottish journalist who exploited the fact that families of the deceased have no legal standing under UK or Scottish defamation legislation. We were guest speakers on a Scottish Woman programme “Poison Pen” in 1993. The theme of the programme centred on unethical journalists and their editors. We highlighted how our dear murdered daughter Diane was unjustly maligned by two campaigning journalist for young offenders and the lack of redress given to families of the deceased under UK defamation legislation. You will find background information on the deaths of our much loved children on Lord Justice Leveson’s website dated the 22 of November 2011 along with our witness statement. While we fully endorse Mr Clifford’s statement to this Privacy and Injunctions Committee regarding our children we would like clarify a few points for the record. 1. We did not have a conversation with Mr Clifford before, during or after the programme or at any other time. 2. The murderer of our daughter was found guilty on 2 Counts, Assaulting Diane on the 9 th of April 1991: Count 2 Premeditated murder of Diane on the 10 th of April 1991. 3. The murderer of our dear daughter lay in wait for our daughter to exit her class with a large kitchen knife, verbally abused our daughter before stabbing Diane through her liver, lung and Heart. 4. We have the transcript of the trial should you need verification of these facts. 5. We have attached a copy of Diane’s post-mortem report. 189
