A GERMAN ZISCHÄGGE, MID-17TH CENTURY<br />

with hemispherical one-piece skull embossed with six<br />

radiating ribs, fitted at its apex with a pierced finial and<br />

circular washer, at its brow with a flat pointed peak<br />

stamped with an arsenal number on the top, a further<br />

arsenal marking underneath and with sliding nasal bar<br />

secured by a locking screw, neck-guard of four upwardoverlapping<br />

lames, a pair of pendant cheek-pieces each<br />

pierced with five holes, and with plain inward turns<br />

throughout<br />

A ZISCHÄGGE, MID-17TH CENTURY, PROBABLY GERMAN<br />

formed of a one-piece hemispherical skull embossed with<br />

six radiating ribs, fitted at its apex with a transverselypierced<br />

finial and circular washer, and at the brow with a<br />

flat peak, the nape with flaring neck-guard of four lames<br />

(the last with rust-perforations at the centre of its obtuselypointed<br />

lower edge), and at each side with a pendent<br />

cheek-piece pointed at its lower end and pierced at its<br />

upper end with five circular ventilation-holes, the peak<br />

stamped at its point with an indistinct mark over the<br />

number 1700 (the last digit partly obliterated by a later<br />

suspension-hole), fitted with rectangular staple and lockingscrew<br />

for a sliding nasal (now missing), the main edges of<br />

the helmet decorated with plain inward turns or ribs, and<br />

with early blackened finish throughout<br />

A GERMAN COMB-MORION, NUREMBERG, CIRCA 1580<br />

with a hemispherical crown rising to a high roped medial<br />

comb (slightly bruised at apex), and an integral brim turned<br />

down at each side, rising to an acute point at the front and<br />

rear, decorated around its edge with a file-roped inward<br />

turn (minor cracks) accompanied by a recessed border, the<br />

front right struck with the quality-control mark of the city of<br />

Nuremberg (the rear and sides each pierced with later<br />

wiring-holes), the base of the crown encircled by twelve<br />

round-headed lining-rivets with rosette-washers, one of<br />

pewter and the remainder of iron, with later etching overall<br />

on a blackened and stippled ground with scrolling foliage<br />

inhabited by winged grotesque masks and involving, at<br />

each side of the crown, oval cartouches enclosing differing<br />

representations of a queen surrounded by a trophy of<br />

arms, and, at each side of the comb, sub-rectangular<br />

cartouches enclosing representations of a naked man riding<br />

a fish (some wear and patination overall)<br />
