A TURKISH YATAGHAN, 19TH CENTURY<br />

with curved reinforced single-edged blade, the lower<br />

portion enclosed in a shaped gilt-metal panel set with<br />

numerous small pieces of coral in raised mouldings,<br />

extending over the hilt to form the back-strap, and a pair of<br />

morse grip-scales rising up to an eared pommel (one small<br />

chip), in an contemporary Balkan silver-mounted leathercovered<br />

wooden scabbard with large repousée mounts<br />

A TURKISH YATAGHAN, THE SCABBARD DATED<br />

FOR 1835/6<br />

with slightly curved single-edged blade, decorated in gold<br />

koftgari with two calligraphic panels and foliage on one<br />

side and designs of scrollwork on the other, the lower<br />

portion of the blade enclosed in a shaped chased white<br />

metal panel extending to form the back-strap (small chips),<br />

large ivory grip-scales rising to a characteristic eared<br />

pommel (small age cracks), in a contemporary leathercovered<br />

wooden scabbard decorated with a panel<br />

including the date in the centre, and with large gilt-brass<br />

locket decorated with scrolling foliage and flowers<br />

encased with a brass panel engraved with foliage, steel hilt<br />

engraved with foliage, fitted with a pair of horn grip-scales<br />

rising to an eared pommel, each profusely studded with<br />

brass nails, in its leather-covered wooden scabbard with<br />

brass mounts engraved en suite<br />
