A FINE RAPIER, CIRCA 1630-40, POSSIBLY ENGLISH<br />

with slender blade of flattened-hexagonal section, stamped<br />

‘IOHANI’ within a short fuller on each side, rectangular<br />

ricasso stamped with the bladesmith’s mark, S crowned on<br />

each side (one side rubbed), steel hilt of engraved faceted<br />

bars, comprising down-curved quillon with large pierced<br />

ovoid openwork terminal decorated with a series of scrolls,<br />

side-ring and knuckle-guard each interrupted with an ovoid<br />

openwork moulding en suite with the quillon, triangular<br />

écusson engraved with a scrollwork horned mask on the<br />

rear, fitted with a down-curved shell-guard pierced with an<br />

arrangement of scrolls matching the quillon terminal,<br />

openwork pommel en suite and chiselled with scrolls about<br />

the button, and early grip bound with plaited wire and<br />

‘Turk’s heads’<br />
