converted from flintlock, with octagonal swamped sighted<br />
barrel rifled with seven grooves and inscribed ‘NFR’ over the<br />
breech, rounded lock with small shell-shaped tail, double set<br />
trigger, figured walnut full stock carved with rococo flowers<br />
and foliage about the barrel tang and at each end of the cheekpiece,<br />
sliding patchbox-cover decorated with shell ornament,<br />
brass mounts including trigger-guard, butt-plate and rear<br />
ramrod-pipe each decorated with a small shell en suite with<br />
the lock, a pair of steel sling swivels, horn fore-end cap, and<br />
horn-tipped wooden ramrod (the steel parts chemically<br />
cleaned, the stock and fore-end cap with small chips)<br />

with blade back-sight (fore-sight missing), scroll-engraved<br />
integral breech, scroll-engraved back-action lock, double<br />
set trigger, ebonised hardwood full stock with chequered<br />
grip (the last 5cm of the fore-end replaced), raised cheekpiece,<br />
sliding patchbox-cover, engraved German silver<br />
mounts including small two-piece side-plate, scrolling<br />
trigger-guard with terminal of shaped outline, and butt-plate<br />
en suite with the trigger-guard, and a single steel sling<br />

FALLING BLOCK TARGET RIFLE BY F. W. KESSLER, SUHL,<br />
NO. S892, CIRCA 1875<br />
with blued sighted barrel of irregular octagonal section, rifled<br />
with six grooves, inlaid with a gold line, inscribed ‘Guss Stahl’<br />
in gold script at the muzzle, and signed in gold within an<br />
elaborate framework of scrolls at the breech, engraved casehardened<br />
breech and action decorated with oak foliage and<br />
gold acorns on a recessed punched ground, the former<br />
decorated with the owners initials in gold, signed casehardened<br />
action-cover retained by a sliding pin and decorated<br />
en suite, double set trigger, the tang decorated en suite and<br />
with provision for an additional back-sight, figured walnut halfstock<br />
inlaid with a single line of horn at the tip, chequered grip,<br />
raised cheek-piece, case-hardened steel mounts decorated en<br />
suite with the action, comprising a pair of solid side-plates on<br />
each side of the action, trigger-guard with forward-curved spur<br />
for a rest, the finial decorated with a pair of jäger in front of the<br />
flag of The Empire and above the inscription ‘wir wolln in einig<br />
volk von brudern’, butt-cap with pronounced toe, a pair of<br />
ramrod-pipes, and a pair of sling swivels, horn fore-end cap,<br />
and contemporary horn-tipped wooden ramrod<br />
