A WAIDBLÄTT, PARTLY 16TH CENTURY<br />

with very thin flat blade formed with an obtuse point,<br />

stamped with a copper-lined cutler’s mark, the letter ‘M’,<br />

etched with foliage on one side at the forte, with the<br />

Crowned English Royal arms on the other, retaining very<br />

small traces of early gilding (worn), and later moulded ivory<br />

grip with shaped pommel (small cracks), in a later scabbard<br />

A COMPOSITE DAGGER, CIRCA 1540, DUTCH OR<br />

GERMAN<br />

in excavated condition, with single-edged blade, iron hilt<br />

with slightly up-turned quillons (a forward branch missing),<br />

side-ring interrupted by a moulding, brass crown-shaped<br />

pommel fitted with an acorn finial, and original wooden<br />

grip; and another, circa 1540, with brass hilt including short<br />

brass quillons and small down-turned shell<br />

Discovered during the dredging of a Dutch polder.<br />
