A RARE GARDE DE HESSEN-DARMSTADT CAVALRY<br />

DEGEN, CIRCA 1750-68<br />

with straight double-edged blade of hollow-hexagonal<br />

section, inscribed ‘Garde de Hesse’ on each side, rectangular<br />

forte, silvered hilt of pallasch form cast in low relief,<br />

comprising short quillon, frontal guard cast with the crowned<br />

monogram of Landgraf Ludwig VIII (1739-1768), knuckleguard<br />

joined to the frontal guard by a pair of curved bars, and<br />

back-strap rising to a lionhead pommel, and the grip bound<br />

with silvered wire, probably the original (small areas of wear)<br />

A GERMAN OFFICER’S DEGEN, LATE 19TH CENTURY<br />

with fine blade cut with a broad fuller filled by three shorter<br />

fullers over the lower half, the latter each pierced with a<br />

series of slotted circles and decorated with etched and gilt<br />

scrolls and trophies on a blued panel, gilt-brass stirrup hilt,<br />

engraved with the initials ‘G. v. K. G.F. R’ on the inner langet<br />

and applied with a silvered garde star on the outer, wirebound<br />

fishskin-covered grip, in its steel scabbard<br />

QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY<br />

with straight fullered blade double-edged towards the point<br />

and etched with foliage over the lower portion, brass<br />

regulation hilt including double shell-guard (each bent upwards),<br />

and urn-shaped pommel cast with acanthus (the grip<br />

binding loose and with losses), in its brass-mounted leather<br />

scabbard; ANOTHER, MID-19TH CENTURY, with straight<br />

fullered blade double-edged at the point, in its brassmounted<br />

leather scabbard (the belt-hook now detached)<br />
