A FINE BONZE SALUTING CANNON, MID-17TH CENTURY,<br />

PROBABLY SPANISH<br />

with tapering multi-stage barrel, strongly moulded muzzle<br />

and astragals, stylised dolphin lifting handles, a pair of plain<br />

trunnions, chiselled with a vacant shield-shaped<br />

escutcheon over the first reinforce, narrow vent field,<br />

moulded globose cascabel chiselled with acanthus foliage<br />

and berry ornament, decorated with bands of scrolling<br />

foliage behind the muzzle and in front of the dolphins, the<br />

latter incorporating a stylised mask and expanded<br />

flowerheads, and incised with the number 3 beneath the<br />

trunnions<br />

A PAIR OF ENGLISH BRONZE SALUTING CANNON,<br />

EARLY 19TH CENTURY<br />

with tapering multi-stage barrels formed with raised<br />

mouldings at the muzzles, and raised bands dividing each<br />

section, struck with London view and proof mark on each<br />

side of the vents, globose cascabels, a pair of plain<br />

trunnions, and stamped ‘3’ and ‘4’ respectively beneath the<br />

middle bands: each on an associated stepped oak carriage<br />

(the carriages worn)<br />
