A 16 BORE GERMAN D.B. PERCUSSION SPORTING GUN<br />

BY V. FUNK IN SUHL, CIRCA 1860<br />

converted from flintlock, with rebrowned sighted barrels<br />

signed ‘Seeber in Sondershausen’ in silver script on the rib,<br />

engraved breeches, engraved breech tang decorated with<br />

clouds and foliage, stepped bolted engraved locks signed<br />

in gold script and decorated with gold details, the hammers<br />

formed as winged monsters, fitted with pivoting nipple<br />

covers, figured walnut half-stock, carved with a monstrous<br />

mask in the round at the fore-end, raised cheek-piece, (the<br />

butt extended in its working life), engraved German silver<br />

mounts including broad trigger-guard decorated with a<br />

capercaillie on the bow and with urn finial, and butt-plate<br />

decorated en suite (one butt-plate screw missing), and<br />

associated brass-tipped wooden ramrod (the steel parts<br />

chemically cleaned throughout)<br />

with etched twist sighted barrels signed ‘Lassence Rongé in<br />

Luttich’, engraved breech, scroll-engraved breech tang<br />

decorated with a stag and numbered ‘1’, engraved flushfitting<br />

locks signed in two parts and decorated with a brace<br />

of pheasant and a hound respectively, blued triggers, figured<br />

walnut half-stock chequered grip, raised cheek-piece,<br />

engraved steel trigger-guard with an additional carved horn<br />

grip, engraved steel butt-plate numbered 417, a pair of steel<br />

sling swivels, German silver barrel bolt escutcheons, and<br />

horn-tipped wooden ramrod, perhaps the original<br />

with terminal of shaped outline, engraved German silver<br />

serpents and foliage, figured walnut half-stock, chequered<br />

grip, raised cheek-piece carved with a spray of foliage to the<br />

rear, scrolling horn trigger-guard (cracked) reinforced with a<br />

steel strip, engraved steel trigger-plate extending to a<br />

pineapple finial ahead of the trigger-guard, engraved steel<br />

butt-plate, and original horn-tipped wooden ramrod<br />

fitted with white-metal patchbox with steel cover, and steel<br />
