Derivation is directional (always?)
lexeme A is basic/motivating, lexeme A’ is derived from/motivated by A
a lexeme:
• meaning(s) [polysemy*]
• form(s) [allomorphy]
• categorial specifications: [depending on lg**]
• word class and perhaps subclass
• inflectional
* I believe that what is involved in
derivation are not in fact lexemes,
but individual senses;
but that would be another talk
(Plank 2007).
** There are languages where the
basic lexical units appear to be precategorial
(“roots”).
