You may find that some of the selections do not seem to change,<br />

but try it on several computers and compare the results. All the<br />

machines should d<strong>is</strong>play the serif, sans serif and monospace fonts,<br />

but the cursive and fantasy may not d<strong>is</strong>play. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> further proof<br />

that HTML <strong>is</strong> not meant to be a ‘design’ tool.<br />

Exerc<strong>is</strong>e 7 – alignment<br />

Having decided on the font, its size and colour, how will it be<br />

presented on the screen? HTML does have some alignment<br />

features, but they are very limited.<br />

Load up TEMPLATE.htm and type the following.<br />

Centred text <strong>is</strong> formal<br />

but dull<br />

Left seems natural, because we read from left<br />

to right<br />

and it has a strong line on the left to orientate us.<br />

Right alignment can be hard to read because<br />

the left-hand side often <br />

has a jagged feel, losing that straight edge that orientates us<br />

as we read.<br />
