M<strong>is</strong>sions tend to be broad statements, maybe only two or three<br />

sentences. Is th<strong>is</strong> appropriate for your web project? Well, yes and<br />

no. If you set too many specific goals at the outset, they can later<br />

become hurdles that are difficult to negotiate. A m<strong>is</strong>sion statement<br />

provides a flexible enough starting point and reference point. From<br />

here on in, you have to monitor just where the process takes you.<br />

You will have to constantly refine and re-assess your ideas in the<br />

light of your original m<strong>is</strong>sion, which in turn may require fine tuning<br />

to ensure the relevance and viability of the final product.<br />

So constant evaluation and some flexibility are important.<br />

However, you also need prec<strong>is</strong>ion to manage the project, with<br />

prov<strong>is</strong>ion for how long it will take and how any success will be<br />

measured. Thus, additional documentation will be required along<br />

the way. As Lynch and Horton (1999) remark:<br />

Building a web site <strong>is</strong> an ongoing process, not a one-time<br />

project with static content. Long-term editorial management<br />

and technical maintenance must be covered in your budget<br />

and production plans for the site.<br />

Such documentation enters the realms of project management,<br />

which <strong>is</strong> also beyond the scope of th<strong>is</strong> book. However, it <strong>is</strong> worth
