Bookshelves groan with the weight of opinion on web design. If<br />

you are looking for guidance, it can be a confusing and<br />

intimidating process. You may have climbed the mountain of<br />

information retrieval in Chapter 3. But now you are in a jungle, full<br />

of warring tribes. And you don’t even speak the language.<br />

Before we proceed, we had better get to know the natives.<br />

Conflicting views and common ground<br />

People are excited about web design. Consequently, they care and<br />

have strong, but sometimes conflicting, opinions. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> fine but<br />

can be confusing for the new arrival. Th<strong>is</strong> divergence of view <strong>is</strong><br />

often characterized as ‘art versus engineering’ or the ‘stuctural<strong>is</strong>ts<br />

versus the designers’. Note the ‘versus’.<br />

Take, for example, Jakob Nielsen. He <strong>is</strong> currently the best-known<br />

usability guru within the web world. An ‘evangel<strong>is</strong>t at heart’, he<br />

believes the primary function of a web resource <strong>is</strong> to meet the<br />

needs of the user as simply and speedily as possible. Content –
