CLINICAL TRIALS AND PRECLINICAL INFRASTRUCTURE ASSET MAP<br />

<strong>Clinical</strong> <strong>Trials</strong> Support Units<br />

The health authorities have five clinical trials support units to aid individual investigators in their clinical<br />

trials. These are shown in Figure 1, summarized in Table 3, <strong>and</strong> described in Appendix 2. The units generally<br />

offer the following services:<br />

• Study design, methodology, <strong>and</strong> protocol development<br />

• Budget planning <strong>and</strong>/or review<br />

• Assistance with REB submission<br />

• Regulatory documentation<br />

• Statistical analysis <strong>and</strong> data management<br />

• Training in clinical trials procedures <strong>and</strong> GCP<br />

• Pharmacoeconomic analysis (at Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute [VCHRI] [through<br />

the Centre for <strong>Clinical</strong> Epidemiology & Evaluation] <strong>and</strong> Providence Health Care Research Institute<br />

[through the Centre for Health Evaluation <strong>and</strong> Outcome Sciences])<br />

• Provision of trained nurses (at Child & Family Research Institute [CFRI] <strong>and</strong> VCHRI)<br />

• Provision of study/ clinic space (at CFRI, VCHRI <strong>and</strong> VIHA Research Department).<br />

In addition, the Laboratory-<strong>Clinical</strong> Studies Unit at the B.C. Centre for Disease Control (<strong>BC</strong>CDC) provides<br />

laboratory support <strong>and</strong> testing for clinical trials.<br />
