Dermatology <strong>Clinical</strong> <strong>Trials</strong> Unit<br />

The Dermatology <strong>Clinical</strong> <strong>Trials</strong> Unit at the Skin Care Centre of U<strong>BC</strong> <strong>and</strong> VGH, conducts investigator-initiated<br />

<strong>and</strong> industry-sponsored clinical trials in all of the major therapeutic areas of dermatology, including<br />

acne, psoriasis, eczema, warts, skin cancer, <strong>and</strong> hair disorders (www.derm.ubc.ca/research/clinical_<br />

trials_unit.htm). The unit covers the full spectrum of clinical studies from Phase I through IV in medicine,<br />

surgery, <strong>and</strong> cosmetics. The Skin Care Centre accommodates over 80,000 patient visits each year.<br />

Dedicated clinical trial facilities include: two examination rooms, a monitor’s room (equipped with a<br />

telephone, internet connection <strong>and</strong> photocopier/printer), an administration office, a trial coordinators’<br />

office, a secure supplies room for CRF storage, double-locking medication storage cupboards, refrigeration<br />

unit <strong>and</strong> a –40°C freezer for sample storage.<br />

Staff include three full-time clinical research coordinators <strong>and</strong> one part-time nurse.<br />

Quality control procedures are based on St<strong>and</strong>ard Operating Procedures <strong>and</strong> Good <strong>Clinical</strong> Practice<br />

guidelines of Health Canada <strong>and</strong> the FDA. All projects are approved by the REB prior to initiation.<br />

Downtown Infectious Diseases Clinic<br />

The Downtown Infectious Diseases Clinic is part of the University of British Columbia, Department of<br />

Anesthesiology, Pharmacology <strong>and</strong> Therapeutics. It is located away from the main Vancouver General<br />

Hospital site, in downtown Vancouver near to St Paul’s Hospital. The Downtown Infectious Diseases<br />

Clinic works with many other clinics including the Pender Community Health Centre ( a clinic in Vancouver<br />

Downtown Eastside) <strong>and</strong> Yale Medical Centre (a privately-run methadone clinic in downtown<br />

Vancouver). Several CIHR Canadian HIV <strong>Trials</strong> Network studies are conducted at the Clinic.<br />

The Clinic primarily conducts Phases II, III, <strong>and</strong> IV clinical trials, as well as investigator-initiated studies,<br />

mainly with HIV <strong>and</strong> HCV patients. Studies accrue approximately 40 patients per year (40% of the estimated<br />

100 new patients seen at the clinic per year). The clinic also has approximately 1,000 registered<br />

patients. It has no independent URL.<br />
