together multi-disciplinary teams from a range of research areas spanning trades <strong>and</strong> technical expertise, <strong>BC</strong>IT researchers create practical<br />
applied research solutions that can be transformed immediately into commercially relevant products, services <strong>and</strong> applications.<br />
<strong>BC</strong>IT research is primarily motivated by the creation of direct <strong>and</strong> indirect benefits for students. Applied research provides students with<br />
practical learning opportunities, <strong>and</strong> produces outcomes that further economic success <strong>and</strong> employment opportunities.<br />

2. NEUROSCIENCE SPECIFIC RESEARCH INSTITUTES<br />
BRC focuses on mechanisms of brain function <strong>and</strong> neurological disorders of the brain including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease,<br />
mood disorders, <strong>and</strong> schizophrenia.<br />
BRC addresses six areas of neuroscience research:<br />
• Neurodegeneration (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS)<br />
• Multiple sclerosis<br />
• Mental health <strong>and</strong> addictions<br />
• Stroke<br />
• Neurotrauma<br />
• Vision.<br />
BRC supports specialized laboratories that incorporate medical science’s most recent advances in technology at the cellular <strong>and</strong> molecular<br />
levels. The Brain Research Centre is committed to developing new technologies to aid diagnosis <strong>and</strong> treatment. Two key areas of technology<br />
at the Centre are diagnostic imaging, which is the observation of activity of the living brain, <strong>and</strong> genomics, which is the application of<br />

ICORD undertakes research into surgical advances, <strong>and</strong> new approaches in rehabilitation leading to better health outcomes for people with<br />
spinal cord injury. ICORD combines more than 350 researchers (43 principal investigators <strong>and</strong> 312 trainees, technicians, <strong>and</strong> staff to foster<br />
<strong>and</strong> maintain an interdisciplinary, collaborative research <strong>and</strong> training environment.<br />
ICORD programs bring together researchers <strong>and</strong> practitioners from the basic sciences, social sciences, medicine, surgery, rehabilitation,<br />
engineering, kinesiology, education, <strong>and</strong> the humanities to facilitate the discovery, development <strong>and</strong> implementation of relevant solutions<br />
that will make a difference for people with spinal cord injury today <strong>and</strong> tomorrow.<br />
