Healthcare Research Centres (cont’d) RESEARCH CENTRE/ URL CONTACT DESCRIPTION 268 A collaborative team of basic scientists, clinicians, and health professionals whose expertise spans genomics, molecular microbiology, immunology, infectious diseases, transplantation immunology, medical genetics, epidemiology, health care delivery, and policy development. IIRC research interests include basic mechanisms of human immune responses involved in transplantation and infectious diseases in order to improve public health outcomes and health services. Current programs Include: • Transplant immunology • PREPARE - proteomics approaches to rapidly identify novel targets in microbial pathogens leading to novel therapeutics and vaccines for emerging infectious diseases. • Centre for Human Islet Transplant and Beta Cell Regeneration: transplantation of beta-cells is a promising treatment option that eliminates the need for insulin injections. CHITBCR conducts research to address the main limitations of beta-cell transplant. One of the PROOF Centre’s flagship programs is the “Biomarkers in Transplantation” initiative. Now in its second phase, this innovative project has identified biomarkers in the blood that will tell the clinical transplant team immediately whether a transplanted organ is being rejected, using a simple blood test. RESEARCH CENTRE/ URL CONTACT DESCRIPTION CHHM aims to prevent falls and hip fractures through early intervention with programs for youths and seniors, educate and train skilled scientists and clinicians, detect osteoarthritis at an early stage, treat bone and joint problems with more effective surgical solutions, including minimally invasive surgeries, evaluate the impact, effectiveness and costs of novel interventions, translate research that is relevant, effective and sustainable into programs, practices and policies through knowledge integration.
