BRITISH COLUMBIA<br />

The clinical trials unit primarily conducts Phases II, III, <strong>and</strong> IV clinical trials. Studies include populations<br />

from newborn to the elderly. Enrollments range in size from 25 to 300 subjects per study.<br />

The facility has five Principal Investigators as listed below, <strong>and</strong> eight Associate Investigators. Their details<br />

can be found in Appendix 6.<br />

The Vaccine Evaluation Centre functions as a cooperative with investigators sharing a pool of staff <strong>and</strong><br />

Quality control procedures are based on Health Canada <strong>and</strong> FDA regulations. The Unit has extensive<br />

SOPs covering multiple aspects of clinical trials, data management, laboratory practices <strong>and</strong> staff training.<br />

Women & Family HIV Centre<br />

The Women <strong>and</strong> Family HIV Centre is a Provincial resource that provides medical care to women,<br />

children <strong>and</strong> youth living with HIV disease in B.C. (no URL). It is jointly sponsored by the Women’s<br />

Health Centre <strong>and</strong> <strong>BC</strong>CH. The centre has an important priority of preventing the transmission of HIV<br />

from pregnant women to their infants by coordinating a Provincial program of treating the mothers<br />

<strong>and</strong> their infants with antiretroviral medications. These infants <strong>and</strong> all HIV infected children <strong>and</strong> youth<br />

less than 18 years of age receive medical care at the centre (see www.cfri.ca/our_research/researchers/search_researchers/researcher_detail.asp?ID=41;<br />

ma?f=102209450.html). The centre is active in clinical research, including novel treatments, vaccines,<br />

<strong>and</strong> diagnostic/ prognostic biomarkers. It is also part of the national surveillance program of the Canadian<br />

Perinatal HIV database, which is reported annually by Public Health Agency of Canada.<br />
