CRPD is an interdisciplinary research centre committed to addressing issues related to a personhood approach to dementia <strong>and</strong> dementia<br />

care. CRPD evolved in response to a recognized need for research to examine the potential of a personhood approach to dementia<br />

care practices in B.C.. CRPD is a trans-disciplinary research centre situated in the School of Social Work <strong>and</strong> Family Studies at U<strong>BC</strong>. CRPD<br />

represents the collaboration between twelve British Columbian researchers engaged in research focused on a person-centred approach to<br />

dementia.<br />

CRPD expertise that capture biomedical, social sciences, <strong>and</strong> humanities perspectives at both academic <strong>and</strong> clinical levels, the CRPD<br />

provides a unique environment for research collaboration. Research activities are contributing to the growing body of research focused on<br />

personhood in dementia. CRPD aims to:<br />

• increase underst<strong>and</strong>ing of personhood in dementia develop interventions for supporting personhood.<br />

GRC was established in 1982 with the help of grants from Imperial Oil, the Real Estate Foundation of B.C., Shoppers Drug Mart, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

Social Sciences <strong>and</strong> Humanities Research Council of Canada. The associated Department of Gerontology was established in 1983.<br />

GRC <strong>and</strong> Department serve as a focal point for research, education <strong>and</strong> information on individual <strong>and</strong> population aging <strong>and</strong> maintain an<br />

active publications program to promote utilization of existing knowledge in the following areas:<br />

• Aging <strong>and</strong> the Built Environment<br />

• Changing Demography <strong>and</strong> Lifestyles<br />

• Culture <strong>and</strong> Aging<br />

• Research <strong>and</strong> development of programs to promote health, well-being <strong>and</strong> a sense of community among ethnic groups.<br />

• Health Promotion/Population Health <strong>and</strong> Aging<br />

• Prevention of Victimisation <strong>and</strong> Exploitation of Older Persons<br />
