VANCOUVER COASTAL HEALTH
Vancouver General Hospital
Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) is one of Canada’s largest teaching and research hospitals. Clinical
research at VGH (and UBC Hospital, described below) is conducted by the Vancouver Coastal Health
Research Institute (VCHRI) (www.vchri.ca), a partnership between Vancouver Coastal Health Authority
and the University of British Columbia.
Arthritis Research Centre
The Arthritis Research Centre of Canada is affiliated with the Vancouver Coastal Health Research
Institute and UBC (www.arthritisresearch.ca). It conducts clinical research and trials related to arthritis
diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, care outcomes, and quality of life issues. It has a clinical trials group
with at least three coordinators.

B.C. Centre for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases
Located at VGH, the B.C. Centre for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases takes a multidisciplinary approach
to stroke care, research, and education (www.bcstrokecentre.ca). The Centre offers 24/7 care
for stroke victims and conducts Phases I, II, and III clinical trials. It is directed by Dr Phil Teal. His details
can be found in Appendix 6. The clinical trials group is comprised of a small team of Stroke Neurologists,
Neuro-Interventionalists and Research Coordinators that are involved in multiple acute stroke and
stroke prevention trials.
Clinical trials include the testing of novel drugs for the acute treatment of strokes and prevention of
secondary strokes.

Cardiology Research
VGH Cardiology Research is an integral part of the VGH/UBC Division of Cardiology. Members of the Division
all participate and function as a team for trial recruitment and follow-up. The Cardiology Research
clinical trials unit conducts Phase IIa, IIb, and III industry-sponsored clinical trials, as well as registries and
investigator-initiated studies. Trials include those investigating new drugs, new indications for established
drugs, devices, and treatment strategies (NIH sponsored). Subjects are recruited from the Coronary
Care Unit, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and out-patient cardiology clinics. Several hundred
patients are enrolled annually. The unit has no independent URL.
