VANCOUVER COASTAL HEALTH<br />

Vancouver General Hospital<br />

Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) is one of Canada’s largest teaching <strong>and</strong> research hospitals. <strong>Clinical</strong><br />

research at VGH (<strong>and</strong> U<strong>BC</strong> Hospital, described below) is conducted by the Vancouver Coastal Health<br />

Research Institute (VCHRI) (www.vchri.ca), a partnership between Vancouver Coastal Health Authority<br />

<strong>and</strong> the University of British Columbia.<br />

Arthritis Research Centre<br />

The Arthritis Research Centre of Canada is affiliated with the Vancouver Coastal Health Research<br />

Institute <strong>and</strong> U<strong>BC</strong> (www.arthritisresearch.ca). It conducts clinical research <strong>and</strong> trials related to arthritis<br />

diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, care outcomes, <strong>and</strong> quality of life issues. It has a clinical trials group<br />

with at least three coordinators.<br />

B.C. Centre for Stroke <strong>and</strong> Cerebrovascular Diseases<br />

Located at VGH, the B.C. Centre for Stroke <strong>and</strong> Cerebrovascular Diseases takes a multidisciplinary approach<br />

to stroke care, research, <strong>and</strong> education (www.bcstrokecentre.ca). The Centre offers 24/7 care<br />

for stroke victims <strong>and</strong> conducts Phases I, II, <strong>and</strong> III clinical trials. It is directed by Dr Phil Teal. His details<br />

can be found in Appendix 6. The clinical trials group is comprised of a small team of Stroke Neurologists,<br />

Neuro-Interventionalists <strong>and</strong> Research Coordinators that are involved in multiple acute stroke <strong>and</strong><br />

stroke prevention trials.<br />

<strong>Clinical</strong> trials include the testing of novel drugs for the acute treatment of strokes <strong>and</strong> prevention of<br />

secondary strokes.<br />

Cardiology Research<br />

VGH Cardiology Research is an integral part of the VGH/U<strong>BC</strong> Division of Cardiology. Members of the Division<br />

all participate <strong>and</strong> function as a team for trial recruitment <strong>and</strong> follow-up. The Cardiology Research<br />

clinical trials unit conducts Phase IIa, IIb, <strong>and</strong> III industry-sponsored clinical trials, as well as registries <strong>and</strong><br />

investigator-initiated studies. <strong>Trials</strong> include those investigating new drugs, new indications for established<br />

drugs, devices, <strong>and</strong> treatment strategies (NIH sponsored). Subjects are recruited from the Coronary<br />

Care Unit, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory <strong>and</strong> out-patient cardiology clinics. Several hundred<br />

patients are enrolled annually. The unit has no independent URL.
