BRITISH COLUMBIA<br />

The unit uses pharmacy staff at <strong>and</strong> outside Vancouver General Hospital in its conduct of clinical trials. It<br />

also uses external laboratory staff.<br />

Quality control/assurance procedures are mainly based on Eye Care Centre st<strong>and</strong>ard practice guidelines,<br />

as well as St<strong>and</strong>ard Operating Procedures. The latter are site specific for the Informed Consent<br />

Form process <strong>and</strong> sponsor specific for each study, including drug accountability <strong>and</strong> drug destruction.<br />

All studies are conducted according to ICH Guidelines. Staff <strong>and</strong> investigators are trained by sponsors,<br />

via a clinical trials specific CDROM, <strong>and</strong> at relevant meetings. All staff are encouraged to obtain SOCRA<br />

(Society of <strong>Clinical</strong> Research Associates) certification. All projects are approved by the REB prior to initiation.<br />

U<strong>BC</strong> Hospital<br />

Alzheimer Disease & Related Disorders’ Clinic<br />

The Alzheimer Disease & Related Disorders’ Clinic is located at U<strong>BC</strong> Hospital (http://ubc-alzclinic.vch.ca/<br />

index.html). The clinic sees over 1,200 patients a year 5 . It is active in Phases II <strong>and</strong> III clinical trials.<br />

The Medical Director (Feldman, Howard) <strong>and</strong> five collaborating physicians take part in clinical trials. The<br />

clinic also has a research coordinator, research assistant, <strong>and</strong> statistician. <strong>Trials</strong> include trying to delay<br />

disease progression in patients with mild cognitive impairment, the treatment of patients with mild to<br />

moderate Alzheimer’s disease, <strong>and</strong> the use of neuroimaging.<br />

Bladder Care Centre<br />

The Bladder Care Centre (<strong>BC</strong>C) is an integrated multidisciplinary diagnostic, treatment <strong>and</strong> research<br />

facility for bladder symptoms located at U<strong>BC</strong> Hospital (http://urology.ubc.ca/bladder-care-centre).<br />

Working at the centre are physicians, surgeons, nurses <strong>and</strong> physiotherapists who are specialized in the<br />

diagnosis <strong>and</strong> treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms. The <strong>BC</strong>C links patients, clients, health professionals<br />

<strong>and</strong> researchers to study <strong>and</strong> advance the goals of prevention <strong>and</strong> treatment of lower urinary
