Radiation Therapy Research Program, <strong>BC</strong>CA Vancouver Centre<br />

The Radiation Therapy Research Program conducts radiation therapy collaborative group clinical trials,<br />

industry sponsored clinical trials, developmental <strong>and</strong> technical research, <strong>and</strong> operations research. It also<br />

undertakes outcomes evaluation, dosimetry studies, <strong>and</strong> other qualitative research. It has no independent<br />

URL.<br />

The Unit conducts all Phases of clinical trials (0 – IV) <strong>and</strong> accrues approximately 200 patients per year.<br />

New trials are approved by the RT Research Committee prior to submission to the REB.<br />

Quality control/ assurance procedures are based on extensive <strong>BC</strong>CA St<strong>and</strong>ard Operating Procedures<br />

compliant with Good <strong>Clinical</strong> Practice (GCP) guidelines. All research staff are trained appropriately in<br />

GCP, clinical trials, <strong>and</strong> these SOPs. There are extensive QA protocols for radiation therapy procedures,<br />

<strong>and</strong> the Radiation Therapy Research Program also ensures QA by using a QUARC model. All projects are<br />

approved by the REB prior to initiation.<br />

Vancouver Isl<strong>and</strong> Centre Radiation Therapy Research Business Unit (VIC RT RBU)<br />

The VIC RT RBU is part of the Vancouver Isl<strong>and</strong> Centre (VIC), one of the <strong>BC</strong>CA’s five full service cancer<br />

centres. The unit was established in 2006, with the m<strong>and</strong>ate of operating research studies <strong>and</strong> trials for<br />

the Radiation Therapy Program at the VIC. Many of the unit’s trials involve testing of innovative radiation<br />

therapy techniques in a clinical setting <strong>and</strong> include large, multi-centre cooperative trials (NCIC, NSABP,<br />
