Clinical Investigators
Over 560 investigators in B.C. have received funding to conduct clinical trials over the past five years.
Many of these individuals are world-renowned, with 16 occupying endowed Chairs. All investigators
included in the clinical trials analysis are listed in Appendix 6 in both alphabetical order and according
to specialty. The main disease areas in which they work are shown in Figure 11, with some researchers
specializing in more than one area. The distribution of investigator expertise broadly reflects the number
of clinical trials conducted over the past five years, as shown in Figure 5.
As well as specializing in disease areas, some investigators also participate in trials that involve epidemiology,
health economics, health outcomes, and pediatrics. The number of such individuals can be seen
in Figure 12. The large number of pediatric trialists reflects the fact that Canada ranks second only to the
U.S. in the number of active, registered clinical trials being conducted in children 17 .
