The unit uses Vancouver General Hospital pharmacy in its conduct of in-patient clinical trials when applicable. Clinical laboratory tests use the VGH Hospital Laboratory and/or are shipped to central laboratories provided by the trial. Hospital research-designated staff in both pharmacy and laboratory have been essential. Quality control procedures are based on: • Standard Operating Procedures for ‘Consenting’ & ‘Adverse Events’ • Following and maintaining the Good Clinical Practice (GCP), ICH regulations and guidelines of Health Canada and the FDA • Regularly attended education, study meetings, and on-line training of GCP provided by the local clinical Research Ethics Board and other programs. Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research Part of the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, the Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research (www.cemcor.ubc.ca) is the only centre in North America that focuses on ovulation and the causes for and consequences of ovulation disturbances. The Centre Director is Jerilynn C. Prior, whose details can be found in Appendix 6. The Centre’s clinical trials are investigator-initiated and are completely independent of funding sources. CLINICAL TRIALS AND PRECLINICAL INFRASTRUCTURE ASSET MAP 77 Dermatology Clinical Trials Unit The Dermatology Clinical Trials Unit at the Skin Care Centre of UBC and VGH, conducts investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials in all of the major therapeutic areas of dermatology, including acne, psoriasis, eczema, warts, skin cancer, and hair disorders (www.derm.ubc.ca/research/clinical_ trials_unit.htm). The unit covers the full spectrum of clinical studies from Phase I through IV in medicine, surgery, and cosmetics. The Skin Care Centre accommodates over 80,000 patient visits each year. Dedicated clinical trial facilities include: two examination rooms, a monitor’s room (equipped with a telephone, internet connection and photocopier/printer), an administration office, a trial coordinators’ office, a secure supplies room for CRF storage, double-locking medication storage cupboards, refrigeration unit and a –40°C freezer for sample storage. Downtown Infectious Diseases Clinic The Downtown Infectious Diseases Clinic is part of the University of British Columbia, Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics. It is located away from the main Vancouver General Hospital site, in downtown Vancouver near to St Paul’s Hospital. The Downtown Infectious Diseases Clinic works with many other clinics including the Pender Community Health Centre ( a clinic in Vancouver Downtown Eastside) and Yale Medical Centre (a privately-run methadone clinic in downtown Vancouver). Several CIHR Canadian HIV Trials Network studies are conducted at the Clinic. The Clinic primarily conducts Phases II, III, and IV clinical trials, as well as investigator-initiated studies, mainly with HIV and HCV patients. Studies accrue approximately 40 patients per year (40% of the estimated 100 new patients seen at the clinic per year). The clinic also has approximately 1,000 registered patients.
