In the early 1950s much <strong>of</strong> the land area in Laropi (Dufile Sub county) was covered<br />

by adequate tree cover such as Acacia, combrentum and fig species. Because <strong>of</strong> this,<br />

some landing sites were named after the abundance <strong>of</strong> the vegetation (for example<br />

Congo). From 1979 to 1986 the local population was driven into exile and when they<br />

returned, their way <strong>of</strong> life had changed. Between 1990 and 2000, there was a boom<br />

in fish catches and fish trade. The most traded fish was smoked using traditional kilns
