Uganda’s economy
More than 73% of the population is mostly the primary
agricultural sub-sector. The country is well endowed with
both renewable and non-renewable resources including
minerals, forests, wetlands, fertile soils, wildlife, lakes
and rivers, hydro-power and a good climate.
Although GDP increased positively in the last 23 years,
the positive benefits of GDP growth have not been felt in
every household in Uganda.
Poverty and inequity continue to prevail albeit at a
reducing level. Some of the causes of persistent poverty
and inequality include rapid population growth (2.3
per cent and one of the fastest in the world) and
environmental degradation. Rapid and unplanned
population growth overstretches the capacity of the
environment to sustain economic progress and human
well-being.
