Latrine Coverage<br />

The use <strong>of</strong> proper toilet facilities is<br />

important in ensuring hygiene and<br />

preventing hygiene related diseases.<br />

In 2005,10.6 percent <strong>of</strong> the households did<br />

not have toilet facilities and used bushes.<br />

About 86 percent <strong>of</strong> households used<br />

a pit latrine and only 3 percent used a<br />

Ventilated Pit-Latrine (VIP).The proportion<br />

<strong>of</strong> households without any toilet facilities<br />

is higher in rural areas than urban areas.<br />

The overall proportion <strong>of</strong> people without<br />

toilet facilities however, decreased from<br />

16.2 percent (2002 <strong>Uganda</strong> Population and<br />

Housing Census, Analytical Report) in 2002<br />

to 10.6 percent in 2005/6 (UNHS 2005/6)<br />

The northern and eastern parts <strong>of</strong> the<br />

country had the largest proportions<br />

<strong>of</strong> households without toilet facilities<br />

with proportions <strong>of</strong> 21 and 16 percent<br />

respectively.<br />
