74 Katuugo Forest Reserve Loss of vegetation cover u g o u g o Since the 1940’s the Ugandan Government has promoted a policy of planting forests on gazetted land to supply cheap softwoods for the country’s growing domestic demand. Uganda’s overall population growth rate of 2.6% and urban growth rate of 5.4% puts enormous pressure on these forests (Ministry of Finance, 2000). This pressure is likely to worsen because 6% of forest on private land and 6.1% of forest
u g o in protected areas has been lost since 1990 (NEMA, 2008). Katuugo, Mafuga and Mwenge Forest reserves are fplanted on gazetted land to supply cheap softwoods for the country’s growing domestic wood demand.
