A subspecies islandicum described by DUVIGNEAUD (1941) from Iceland is doubtful, the type having been lost, and should be discarded as a nomen dubium (see p. 321). Fo. congestum (MAGN.) I. MACKENZIE LAMB: A Conspectus of Stereocaulon 209 (FH, holotypus). Remarks: the type material was of scarce occurrence on a rock in the lichen-heath, firmly attached, forming compact pulvinate clumps ca. 4 cm diarn. with the typical cauliflower-like habitus and woody, fastigiate, glabrous pseudopodetia. Soredia PDffaint yellow; atranorin and porphyrilic acid demonstrated by chromatography. Resembles St. spathuliferum VAIN. f. globuliferum (MAGN.) LAMB and St. capitellaturn MAGN., but has the chemical constitution of St. botryosum. We have seen also one specimen from W. Greenland referable to this form. 7. Stereocaulon capitellaturn MAGN. VI (1961) no. 116 (FH, GZU, KLEM, LD) is a different species, containing lobaric acid; we have not been able to determine it with certainty.) Mat. chirn.: presumed full chemical spectrum: atranorin, perlatolic acid, anziaic acid, miriquidic acid (the type specimen belongs here). Deficient phase I: atranorin, perlatolic acid, anziaic acid (the type specimen of St. farinaceum belongs here). Deficient phase 11: atranorin only (one specimen from Greenland). Distrib.: Sweden, Norway, Finland, Austria, Switzerland, Iceland, Greenland. Remarks: examination of fairly copious material has convinced us that the differences supposed to separate St. farinaceurn from St. capitellatum are quite variable and taxonomically insignificant. 8.
