Study programme structure:
Study programme 1: 2 years. After the first two years students may transfer to another study
programme (usually to engineering).
Study programme 2: 3 years.
Since the academic year 2010/11, the ESTA in Madrid offers a Bachelor study programme. New
premises were constructed for this purpose.
Number of students: 4600 (+1200 in the final project completion phase)

´Numerus Clausus´ (Restricted admission): The grade average of the previous year was 8.04. (A
10 in the Spanish grading system equates to a 1 in the German system).
In contrast to most other Spanish colleges, Madrid has a total workload of about 300 ECTS credits.
Not included in this are optional courses and the final project.
Since the profession of the construction engineer does not exist in Spain, the qualification
equivalent to that of a construction engineer is included in the architectural degree. For this reason
structures, building technology and calculations (physics and mathematics) are specialisations of
the study programme.
Composición is a theoretical subject and gives students insight into the theory of architectural
aesthetics. In parallel to the theoretical units of the subject, students also complete practical work.
Even though the exercises include small design problems, it is not a design subject.

- Optional courses chosen on-line by students who then work through the course independently.
This optional course offer exists in cooperation with all other universities in Madrid and places the
focus on business administration and management.
- UPM’s shared interdisciplinary optional courses (these are not listed in AIII)
- Subjects in other faculties (these are not listed in AIII)
- Professorship for university and business enterprises. This professorship ensures for the cooperation
between private companies and the university with the purpose of developing new
technologies. The courses offered in this context may count as optional courses (these are not
listed in AII). These include courses such as „Hormigón Arquitectura“ (Architecture and concrete)
which includes a conference; and very technically oriented workshops, such as „Cerámica
Constructiva“ (Construction ceramics). The latter explores the technology of ceramics and its
possible uses. Beyond this, the course „Cátedra Blanca“ (White concrete) intends to develop new
uses for white concrete, while the course „Cátedra Unesco“ (…) explores building construction in
areas of conflict. Designs for Cátedra Unesco can be used for final project submissions.
